Rio 2016 Paralypics

Early last year Limb Solutions once again joined forces with Jon-Allan Butterworth to redesign bespoke cycling arms for Rio games.

This time he wanted something different so tried a clutch lock and liner to move away from tight straps. Angles were essential to get the perfect position of the attachment. Made with bulsa wood fitting was very difficult as the material is so fragile until laminated over

First fit took place at the Manchester Velodrome and looked good

Off to Rio

Lone issue with The Games is selection is at the end of summer which did not give much chance to make changes. It was not until the training camp in August, 2 weeks before the Games we started the final design. Principally the same, we have to modify angles and improve the design for a different attachment to new handlebars.

So with only 3 weeks until the event, it was of to Newport Velodrome. With the heating up to 30 degrees working was interesting and over the next days with trips back to my clinic the final arm was completed, a long with a new sprint arm too

Gold Medal and new World Record !!!

The day before the flight to Rio we had a call to say the lock had broken. Ian drove and met Jon at Heathrow only to find it had to be replaced. Back to Hampshire and 4 hours later the arm was delivered back to Heathrow at 1am.

Jon-Allan was competing in 2 events, C5 Kilo and Mixed Team Sprint. With a nail-biting finish he was pipped at the post into 4th place, but in the Team Sprint along with Louis Rolfe and Jody Cundy took Gold in a New World Record time
